Obi vows jail terms for electoral fraud
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral laws and ensure the prosecution of electoral offenders, including officials found guilty of manipulating election results, if elected president in 2027.
Speaking at an NDC town hall meeting in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, on Wednesday, the former Anambra State governor said his administration would prioritise electoral transparency, accountability and the rule of law.
Obi warned that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other individuals implicated in electoral malpractice would face prosecution and possible imprisonment under applicable laws.
He said Nigeria’s electoral system required stronger institutions, credible political parties and effective enforcement of existing regulations to restore public confidence in elections.
The former governor also proposed stricter scrutiny of the educational qualifications of candidates seeking public office.
According to him, aspirants should demonstrate that they attended primary and secondary school, while individuals who forge academic certificates or misrepresent their educational backgrounds should face legal consequences.
Obi maintained that political officeholders and ordinary citizens must be treated equally before the law, regardless of their status or influence.
He said his presidential ambition was driven by the need to build a country where democratic institutions function effectively, electoral rules are respected and public officials are held accountable.
The NDC candidate argued that credible elections were essential to strengthening democracy and ensuring that elected leaders remained answerable to the electorate.
His proposals would require legislative and institutional measures, while any changes to the constitutional qualifications for elective office would need to comply with Nigeria’s legal framework.
Obi’s remarks come as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with electoral credibility, transparency and the independence of INEC expected to feature prominently in political debates.
The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for 16 January 2027, while governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for 6 February 2027.
