LP Dismisses Talks of Merger with PDP

The Labour Party (LP) has denied rumours that it will join forces with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2027 in an effort to unseat the incumbent All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement released on Thursday, LP spokesman Obiora Ifoh noted that his party had only recently wrapped off the whole 2023 presidential election incident and had not yet conducted a postmortem.

Ifoh has stated, “When we do, Nigerians will be adequately informed.” regarding the party’s future plans.

The LP’s response came after former Vice President and PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar proposed a coalition of opposition parties to take on and defeat the governing APC in the next presidential election, scheduled for February.

On Tuesday, Atiku warned that Nigeria was headed towards a “one-party dictatorship” and urged the other opposition parties to work together to topple the APC government.

Reacting in a statement on Thursday, the LP said Atiku’s demand “was merely a proposal and every Nigerian should be engaged in making democracy function in Nigeria and that what we have today is an autocracy”.

“The proposed merger between LP and PDP was not addressed anywhere in the response.” Ifoh emphasised.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) also criticised Atiku for his idea, claiming the ex-vice president and his party have been electoral losers in Nigeria since 2015.
