Read moreBy Toungo, Babayola M My heart goes out to the many All Progressive Party (APC) supporters in Adamawa state who have had to bear a leadership that is at best unsure of its next steps after losing power in 2019 – and with a sitting governor at the time. It appears that the party leadership is still recovering from the electoral battering they took in the 2019 elections, which is clouding their judgement and giving them a false sense of worth. After going through an election in which they were willing to do anything, even treason, to win the governor seat and coming up empty-handed, the APC leadership has resorted to making up bedtime stories in order to keep their apathetic supporters prisoner. I recently came across a video of one of the party’s “shadow cabinet members” making wild and unsubstantiated allegations about a phantom group of Islamic clerics hired by the state government to go to the president and tell him that Adamawa people do not want a female governor and that he should therefore suborn the courts to affirm the declaration of his excellency, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri as the elected governor of Adamawa state. As if that wasn’t enough, the APC had a mullah (?) film a video in which he rehashed all of the outlandish charges made by our “shadow cabinet member” earlier. Is it possible for Tinubu to intervene in someone else’s case while battling for his lofty post in court? I don’t usually give in to my first instincts of reacting to such childish outbursts, but seeing the two videos reminds me of Fox Network and Donald Trump. They inspire Trump followers to invade the United States Capitol Hill (the equivalent of our National Assembly) by promoting such conspiracy theories. Their plan was to declare Trump the winner of the elections in November 2019. This occurred in January 2020. The APC is unconcerned about how the public will react to such false information because they did worse during the elections and got away with it. They conveniently forgot that the president had the first female deputy governor. Both videos were devoid of facts but dense with innuendos, and their sole purpose was to inform APC leaders that “we are still around wo.” With federal appointments coming to an end, I believe that some people are attempting to position themselves in order to be noticed. Because the main course is almost over, the morsels and bones will suffice. You can sell yourself without insulting the system from which you seek protection; you may also get noticed if you have something to offer without ruffling feathers. If you lie to me when you are not in office, how can I trust you with my fate if I elect you to any post of public trust? The implication of what the two APC tendencies attempted to achieve – APC secular and APC spiritual – is to call the neutrality of the judiciary into question, the same judiciary that the party sought help from.
