Achraf Hakimi of Morocco and Mohamed Salah of Egypt were his opponents, but Osimhen emerged victorious.   Monday’s accolade rounded off an outstanding year for the Super Eagles forward, who broke Nigeria’s 24-year-old wait for Africa’s top individual prize with his historic accomplishment in the royal Moroccan city of Marakesh. Until the legendary Kanu Nwankwo took home the trophy in 1999, no Nigerian had ever won it.   Osimhen is a vital player of both the national team and his club Napoli, and this award is a tribute to his achievements on all fronts. He was the first African to ever win the Pichichi (top scorer) trophy, and he was instrumental in leading the Italian team to an unparalleled Serie A title run with 26 goals.   He scored more goals than any other European player in the Italian Serie A, surpassing George Weah’s previous record. It was 33 years ago, during the reign of the great Diego Maradona, that Napoli last won the Scudetto.   The former Lille striker was named to the Serie A Team of the Year and won the award for Best Striker for the 2022–23 season due to his superb play.   The Serie A team’s historic performance in 2023 was mostly due to Osimhen, who was ranked in the Ballon d’Or competition. He became the most-ranked Nigerian in the award’s history and the highest-ranked African for the year when he finished ninth.   The first African to ever receive the AIC award, the Nigerian became the first player this month to be named player of the year by the Italian footballers’ association.   Despite Nigeria’s heartbreaking elimination from the 2022 World Cup at the hands of long-time rivals Ghana, Osimhen made tremendous strides for the Super Eagles that season.

The seven abducted students from Nasarawa State’s Federal University of Lafia (FULAFIA) were released four days ago. On Sunday night, the students were freed thanks to a joint operation by the military and other security agencies.   The news was confirmed during a phone interview with Channels Television by Ibrahim Ogabo, president of the Student Representative Council. At the time this complaint was being filed, the group of students, which included three females and four males, were at the school’s clinic.   Students protested immediately after the kidnapping that happened on Wednesday night when they were taken from their off-campus housing in Gandu village.   The protesters called for more security in the area and demanded the release of their fellow marchers. Among the six nearby villages, Gandu village is particularly prominent among students.   The institution does not provide housing for the more than 6,000 students in levels 300 to 500, thus it serves as an alternative. Students, locals, and businesses in Gandu have all felt the effects of the kidnappings and robberies that have plagued the city.

“Promptly publish details of barrels of oil Nigeria produces and exports every day and the total amounts of revenues generated from oil since the removal of subsidy on petrol in May 2023,” the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged Mr. Mele Kolo Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, to release.   “You are obligated to reveal the amount of oil revenue that has been transferred to the public coffers following the elimination of petrol subsidies,” SERAP admonished him.   In addition, SERAP urged him to “disclose details of payment of N11 trillion as subsidy and to clarify allegations that the NNPCL has failed to remit revenues generated from oil to the public treasury since the removal of subsidy on petrol.”   “The NNPCL is failing to remit enough foreign exchange into the treasury despite the removal of fuel subsidy,” asked Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), who made the accusation last week.   The letter, which was signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare and dated 9 December 2023, stated that the organisation believes “there is a legitimate public interest in disclosing the information sought.”   This is what SERAP had to say: “Opacity in the amounts of barrels of oil the country produces and exports daily, the revenues generated and remitted to the public treasury would have negative impacts on the fundamental interests of the citizens and the public interest.”   “The public would have more faith that the funds would be utilised for the benefit of Nigerians if there was transparency to prevent their diversion into private pockets.”   “Any considerations to withhold the information are outweighed by the public interest in publishing the information sought,” the letter said in part. We kindly request that the suggested actions be implemented no later than seven days after this letter is received or published.   In the event that SERAP does not receive a response from you by that date, it will investigate possible legal measures to force the NNPCL to fulfil our requests, since it is in the best interest of the public.

In response to the recent unintentional bombing of Tudun Biri village in the Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, a group known as the Concerned Northern Lawyers Forum has denounced the occurrence and threatened legal action against the Federal Government.   According to the group, the victims of the military drone attack want the federal government to pay them enough compensation, thus they’ve decided to sue. At a news conference in Kaduna on Saturday, the group’s spokesman, Nafi’u Abubakar, denied the Nigerian Army’s assertion that the strike was an accident and maintained that the operation was premeditated against the Tudun Biri community’s innocent residents.   To get to the bottom of the bombing tragedy, he demanded that the federal government launch an independent investigation into it right away. To ensure that no innocent people were killed in the course of the Nigerian Army’s operations, Abubakar also requested that the military review its training protocols and rules of engagement.   The most recent military tragedy happened on December 3, 2023, and over 85 people were confirmed killed. Scores more were injured. Rights groups have denounced the strike, and the Nigerian Army has already apologised, promising that it will not happen again.   The authorities in Nigeria have repeatedly failed to hold the military accountable for a lengthy string of such atrocities, which has led to the irresponsibility of the military.   The illegal murders of innocent people must not be ignored, stated Isa Sanusi, the director of Amnesty International Nigeria.   Both Governor Sani and President Bola Tinubu have demanded an investigation into the tragedy that has rocked the country.
