New Terror Group: Acting Army Chief Oluyede Arrives in Sokoto
Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, Acting Chief of Army Staff, has arrived in Sokoto for his first operational visit to the 8th Division’s Area of Responsibility.
In the northwestern state, he is set to meet with the Sultan of Sokoto and other stakeholders from the 8th Division Area of Responsibility.
He planned to utilise the chance to address troops from Operation Fasan Yamma, which is fighting militants in the northwest.
Oluyede’s visit comes three days after the Defence Headquarters acknowledged the formation of a new terror cell called ‘Lakurawa’ in Sokoto and Kebbi states.
Five local government areas in Sokoto State are confronting a new terror group named as the Lakurawa.
According to Defence Media Operations Major General Edward Buba, the new terror organisation is worsening insecurity in the north-west region, but the Nigerian Armed Forces have already contained them.
A new terrorist group in the North West faces the military. This sect is known as the Lakuwaras, and they are linked to terrorists in the Sahel, particularly those from Mali and the Niger Republic.
“They began incursion into Northern part of Nigeria, mainly Sokoto and Kebbi states, and like I mentioned, they came in from Niger and Mali axis,” according to General Buba.
He also stated that the new terror group arose from Mali and the Republic of Niger following the coup, which resulted in the breakdown of military collaboration between Nigeria and Niger.
The military has also declared nine terrorists sought for their involvement in the country’s security difficulties.
