Sani accuses Tinubu of encouraging corruption by failing to investigate past military spending.
Shehu Sani, a former federal legislator, has criticised President Bola Tinubu for claiming he is uninterested in investigating military spending under his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly, claimed the President’s stance contradicted his investigation into the past operations of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under beleaguered apex bank leader Godwin Emefiele.
During a media interview on Monday, Tinubu stated that he will not investigate military expenses under Buhari. However, Sani, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today show on Tuesday, argued that doing so would encourage thievery and corruption.
The former lawmaker stated, “When you find yourself in this position, especially with a country facing these critical issues like ours, you still have to go backward and see how public funds that were looted have been recovered, and I believe we have been doing so with what happened in the CBN the last time.
But when one of the panellists questioned him (Tinubu) about the looting and mishandling of security and defence services during the Buhari administration, which he has to investigate, I believe he demonstrated that he is more interested in moving forward than backward.
CBN allows for backward movement, but security does not.I believe that if he is presented with proof demonstrating clear cases of corruption, he should take action to reclaim public funds. This was the anticipated response. If you argue that whatever happened in the past is no longer relevant, you are praising larceny, as he has done by stating that he would not return.”
Sani stated that the president should be held accountable for all of his policies and the activities of his ministers, despite claims that all of his cabinet members are performing well.
“We must hold him (Tinubu) accountable for the events of his administration. He has implemented economic reforms.
He has begun; there are many pains, and Nigerians are suffering, but it is a fact all across the world and throughout history that economic reforms have never been popular with citizens,” he stated.
