Tinubu fires Adamawa Rogue REC Hudu Yunusa Ari, others.
On Wednesday, the Senate granted President Bola Tinubu’s plea to remove the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners of Abia, Adamawa, and Sokoto states.
The president’s request was granted following the passage of a motion proposed by Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.
The suspended RECs are Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa), and Nura Ali (Sokoto).
Remember that the president had requested consent from the red chamber to terminate their positions due to charges of gross misbehaviour.
While moving the motion, Bamidele stated that the president’s proposal is consistent with Section 157(1) of the constitution.
During a discussion on the motion, Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro stated that the removal of the resident commissioners would serve as a disincentive to individuals holding public office.
“This administration told Nigerians that it would battle corruption. As a result, the firing will act as a deterrence to individuals in public service,” he stated.
Also speaking, Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno stated that with 91 senators present in the red chamber on Wednesday, the Senate has sufficient numbers (two-thirds) to approve the president’s proposal.
“The philosophical basis for this proposal is to strengthen Section 157(1) of the Constitution. He went on: “We must fulfil our responsibilities to safeguard the integrity of public offices.”
Senate President Godswill Akpabio called for a voice vote to approve the motion during the plenary session.
