Tinubu can be defeated in 2027, says Daura
The vice-presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Lawal Daura, has said President Bola Tinubu is beatable in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that his administration has made several mistakes.
Daura spoke on Monday, hours after the APM inaugurated its presidential campaign office in Abuja. The party has named the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, as its presidential candidate.
The former director general of the Department of State Services described Tinubu as “a very amiable person” but maintained that the president could be defeated at the polls.
Asked whether he believed Tinubu could lose the election, Daura replied: “Very well.”
“Nobody is perfect, especially when you are a politician. You commit so many errors, even if they are inadvertent,” he said.
Daura said the APM was not merely seeking to exploit the government’s alleged failings but was also offering suggestions on how they could be corrected.
“We are not taking advantage; we are even helping to correct those errors. But those functionaries who are either incompetent or unable to see what we are seeing may not allow the corrections to be made,” he said.
Making a case for the APM ticket, Daura said he and Makinde shared a commitment to repositioning Nigeria and understood each other’s approach to national development.
“We are a pair that seems to understand each other. We share the same passion for this country, and one of our mottos is that we are resetting this country,” he said.
Daura described Makinde as a politician who understood both the analogue and digital generations, saying this placed him in a strong position to connect with Nigeria’s large youth population.
He pledged to remain loyal to Makinde if the party wins the election, adding that any disagreement between them would be based on policy rather than personal differences.
The Makinde-Daura Presidential Campaign Office was inaugurated in Abuja earlier on Monday.
Those present included Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress; a former Osun State governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola; federal and state lawmakers; members of the APM Board of Trustees and National Working Committee; and other party supporters.
