Labour Party Approves Obi’s Coalition Move, Usman Slams Abure.
Nenadi Usman, the Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), claims the party has endorsed Peter Obi, its 2023 presidential candidate, joining an opposition alliance led by David Mark.
In a statement released on Thursday, Usman referred to the Julius Abure-led group within the Labour Party as “political jesters with no legitimate standing in the Labour Party”.
Usman, through her aide Ken Asogwa, emphasised that Abure and those behind the 48-hour ultimatum issued to Obi to resign are “neither recognised by the party nor by the law, having long been sacked by the Supreme Court of Nigeria – the highest court in the land – and suspended from the party for their serial acts of indiscipline and anti-party activities.”
She reiterated that the party had agreed to Obi’s participation in the coalition talks.
The interim LP head stated, “For the avoidance of doubt, the leadership of the Labour Party publicly declared its full support for Mr. Obi’s participation in the coalition efforts aimed at creating a robust political alternative to rescue Nigeria from the APC’s disastrous misrule on May 26, 2025.” That position has not altered.
“We would like to reiterate that Mr. Peter Obi’s participation in coalition activities, including the ADC unveiling, was done with the full knowledge, approval, and support of the Labour Party leadership.”
“The current administration, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, is still cleaning up the leftovers of the anarchy and filth left by these impostors. As a result, members of the public, particularly the media, are exhorted to disregard the distractions and mischief of these discredited groups.”Leaders and members of the opposition coalition met in Abuja on Wednesday to proclaim the African Democratic Party (ADC) as the platform for the 2027 election.
They appointed former Senate President David Mark and former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola as interim National Chairman and Secretary, respectively.
In addition to Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and many more attended the meeting. Others are Dino Melaye, Solomon Dalong, Dele Momodu, Gabriel Suswam, Ireti Kingibe, Emeka Ihedioha, and Sadique Abubakar.
