Soldier kills wife, takes own life at Niger barracks, army says
A soldier serving at Wawa Cantonment in Niger State allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life, the Nigerian Army said on Monday.
In a statement, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations Stephen Nwachukwu identified the soldier as Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi of the 221 Battalion. The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, October 11, 2025.
“The tragic incident, which occurred at Wawa Cantonment, Niger State, has caused tension and left residents in shock as to what could have led to such an unfortunate occurrence,” the statement said.
According to the army, the bodies of Femi and his wife were found in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters within the barracks. Preliminary investigation showed the soldier had been on duty earlier and obtained permission from his superior to attend to personal matters before returning.
“The Nigerian Army deeply regrets this, while commiserating with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased over the painful loss. The army also prays for the peaceful repose of their souls,” Nwachukwu said.
He added that the remains of the couple have been preserved as an in-depth investigation continues to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, assured the public that the findings would be made public and that measures would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
