Tinubu reshuffles cabinet as Edun exits, Oyedele takes finance role

A minor cabinet reshuffle approved by Bola Ahmed Tinubu has led to the exit of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, alongside the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa.

According to a memo signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, both ministers are to step down from the Federal Executive Council, with successors already appointed.

Edun has been directed to hand over to Taiwo Oyedele, who moves up from his role as Minister of State for Finance to assume the position of Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy. In the same vein, Dangiwa will hand over to Muttaqha Rabe Darma, who has been named minister designate for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

A statement issued by Yomi Odunuga, media aide to the SGF, confirmed that the outgoing ministers have been instructed to conclude the transition process no later than April 23, 2026. No official reason was provided for the reshuffle, and the memo did not indicate any future roles for those leaving office.

Akume explained that the changes are intended to improve cohesion in governance and enhance economic delivery under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He noted that the President exercised constitutional powers under Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution in effecting the changes.

President Tinubu thanked the outgoing ministers for their service and wished them well, adding that cabinet adjustments would remain an ongoing process.

Edun, appointed in 2023, previously served as Lagos State Commissioner for Finance during Tinubu’s tenure as governor and built a career in merchant banking, corporate finance and economic policy. He studied Economics at the University of London and earned a master’s degree from the University of Sussex, later becoming chairman of Chapel Hill Denham Group and serving as an executive director at Stanbic IBTC.

His successor, Oyedele, is a public policy expert and economist who previously chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. He holds qualifications from Yaba College of Technology and Oxford Brookes University, and has completed executive programmes at institutions including the London School of Economics, Yale University and Harvard Kennedy School. He spent over two decades at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he rose to become a fiscal policy partner.
