Speaker urges Christian youths to embrace self reliance, reject political violence ahead of 2027
The Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Bathiya Wesley, has urged Christian youths across the state to pursue self reliance, remain security conscious and reject political violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wesley made the call on Saturday during the LCCN Lutheran Gospel Singers Convention held at the Covenant Ground in Demsa Local Government Area.
Addressing participants at the convention, the Speaker said the future of Adamawa and Nigeria depends largely on the decisions young people make regarding personal growth, leadership and civic engagement.
He advised youths to avoid idleness and invest in productive ventures capable of making them financially independent.
“Do not wait for government or politicians to create opportunities for you. Acquire skills, start small businesses and work hard to stand on your own,” he said.
Wesley also stressed the need for community vigilance and encouraged young people to support efforts aimed at improving security by reporting suspicious activities to relevant authorities.
“Security is everybody’s business. If you see something unusual in your community, speak up. Silence helps criminals,” he said.
Speaking on preparations for the 2027 elections, the Speaker encouraged Christian youths to engage constructively in the democratic process rather than remain passive observers.
According to him, young people should seek elective positions, volunteer in political activities and make electoral choices based on competence and character.
“Politics is not a dirty game. It becomes dirty when good people refuse to participate,” he said.
He, however, cautioned against involvement in political violence and warned youths not to allow themselves to be used to create unrest.
“Do not accept political violence. Do not allow any politician to use you to cause trouble. Your life is more valuable than any election,” Wesley added.
The Speaker also reminded participants of the importance of faith and service, urging them to remain committed to Christian values in their studies, businesses and public life.
Responding, youth leaders at the convention expressed appreciation for the Speaker’s message and pledged to promote peace, self reliance and responsible civic participation across their communities.
