Obasanjo, Peter Obi, Sanwo-Olu celebrate Obi of Onitsha at 85
An elaborate celebration was held in honour of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, who marked his 85th birthday on Friday at The Delborough Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos. The monarch also serves as chairman of the hotel’s board.
The event drew an array of distinguished guests, including political leaders, traditional rulers, captains of industry and other prominent Nigerians who gathered to celebrate the revered monarch. Guests were welcomed with colourful cultural dance performances on arrival.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in his tribute, reflected on his longstanding relationship with the Obi of Onitsha, describing him as a man of peace whose influence cuts across Nigeria.
“Over the years, what you have consistently demonstrated to me is that you are a man of peace and a peacemaker. One of the things that endears you to me is that wherever I go, traditional rulers in the North, South, East and West all speak highly of you,” Obasanjo said.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, described the monarch as a father figure, revealing that he had left another engagement to attend the celebration. He also offered prayers for the monarch’s continued good health and longevity.
Responding, the Obi of Onitsha reflected on his enduring friendship with Obasanjo, recalling occasions during the former president’s time in office when he hosted him, as well as their continued interactions following his ascension to the throne. He expressed appreciation to the guests for honouring his invitation and celebrating the milestone with him.
Among those in attendance were Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, Nkiru Anumudu, Group Chief Executive Officer of Nestoil, Obi Jackson, founder and chairman of Stanel Group, Stanley Uzochukwu, alongside other eminent personalities from across the country.
