PSC hands over 50,000 police recruits for nationwide training
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has formally handed over 50,000 newly recruited police constables to the Nigeria Police Force for training, marking the completion of a nationwide recruitment exercise initiated under President Bola Tinubu’s directive to strengthen internal security.
The handover ceremony, held on Thursday, was presided over by PSC Commissioner I, retired Justice Paul Galumje, according to a statement by the commission’s spokesperson, Torty Kalu.
Galumje said the recruitment was conducted in line with the President’s directive and relevant statutory provisions. He thanked Tinubu for supporting the exercise and formally presented the successful candidates to the Nigeria Police Force for training at designated police colleges and other approved institutions.
He also handed over the list of successful candidates, stored on a flash drive, to the police authorities.
Receiving the recruits on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Deputy Inspector-General Isyaku Mohammed, who heads the Force Training and Development Department, commended the PSC for conducting what he described as a transparent recruitment process.
Mohammed said the training would begin simultaneously across the country once funding for the exercise was released.
“The training will commence nationwide as soon as funds are released,” he said.
Also speaking, the Director of the Police Service Department at the Ministry of Police Affairs, Ibrahim A. Muhammad, described the recruitment process as credible and transparent.
The Secretary to the PSC, Onyemuche Nnamani, attributed the successful completion of the exercise to effective collaboration among stakeholders, saying the outcome reflected teamwork among all parties involved.
Tinubu declared a nationwide security emergency on November 26, 2025, and approved the recruitment of 50,000 police officers to address growing insecurity across the country.
The PSC opened its recruitment portal on December 15, 2025, and later extended the application deadline by two weeks to February 8, 2026. The exercise was completed about seven months after it began.
The newly recruited constables are expected to strengthen the manpower of the Nigeria Police Force after completing their training and subsequent deployment.
