Shettima begins first leave since assuming office as vice president
Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week leave following approval by President Bola Tinubu, marking his first official leave since assuming office on May 29, 2023.
The announcement was made on Thursday in a statement issued by the Vice President’s media aide, Stanley Nkwocha.
According to the statement, the leave, which began on Thursday, will allow Shettima to devote time to study, reflection and intellectual renewal as part of efforts to enhance his capacity for national service.
Nkwocha said the Vice President would use the period to review the administration’s ongoing programmes, deepen his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues, and prepare for future responsibilities as the Federal Government intensifies implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The statement highlighted Shettima’s role since taking office, noting that he has remained actively involved in coordinating and supervising strategic government initiatives, particularly in economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation and regional cooperation.
It also noted that the Vice President has chaired meetings of the National Economic Council, which brings together the governors of the 36 states, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other senior public officials to deliberate on policies affecting the economy and the welfare of Nigerians.
Beyond his domestic responsibilities, the statement said Shettima has represented President Tinubu at major international and regional engagements, where he has advanced Nigeria’s positions on economic integration, peace and security, climate action, investment and sustainable development.
Nkwocha added that the Vice President remained committed to the ideals of loyalty, duty and service, as well as supporting President Tinubu’s efforts to build a more secure, productive and prosperous Nigeria.
Shettima is expected to resume his official duties at the end of the two-week leave.
