Adamawa honours Tukur with Monday work free day

Adamawa’s governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has declared Monday 14 September a work-free day in honour of Bamanga Tukur, the former governor of the defunct Gongola state.

In a statement by his chief press secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, the governor said the declaration applied to Monday only, allowing residents to pay their last respects and reflect on Tukur’s life and legacy.

Tukur was buried in Yola on Sunday 13 September after funeral prayers at the Lamido’s Palace.

Fintiri said the work-free day recognised the late statesman’s contributions to the development of Adamawa and Nigeria.

Essential services are expected to continue operating.

Flags will remain at half-mast across the state throughout the three-day mourning period previously declared by the government.

The governor urged residents to pray for the repose of Tukur’s soul and for strength for his family, friends and the people of Adamawa to bear the loss.
