Tinubu extends 2025 budget implementation to December

President Bola Tinubu has signed an amendment extending implementation of the 2025 budget to December 31, 2026, giving federal ministries and agencies another three months to complete ongoing capital projects.

The President signed the Appropriation (Amendment) (No. 4) Bill, 2025, following its passage by the Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday, September 29.

The latest amendment moves the implementation deadline from September 30 to December 31, 2026.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said in a statement on Wednesday that the extension would allow Ministries, Departments and Agencies to complete ongoing capital projects and utilise funds already appropriated without disrupting critical programmes.

Tinubu also commended the leadership and members of the National Assembly for the prompt consideration and passage of the amendment, describing it as evidence of cooperation between the executive and legislature.

The National Assembly had approved the extension after considering an executive request seeking additional time for MDAs to complete projects and capital expenditures provided for under the 2025 fiscal framework.

The move marks another extension of the 2025 budget implementation period, which was originally expected to end in December 2025.

The deadline had previously been shifted to March 31, 2026, then June 30 and subsequently September 30 before the latest extension to the end of December.

The repeated extensions have kept the 2025 fiscal framework running well beyond its original calendar year as the government seeks to complete outstanding capital projects and utilise released funds.
