INEC bows to pressure, moves 2027 voters’ register online
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to publish the preliminary register of voters for the 2027 general elections on its website, following calls from Nigerians and electoral stakeholders for wider public access.
In a statement issued on Monday by the chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the commission said the decision was intended to strengthen transparency, accessibility and public confidence in the electoral process.
INEC said it had considered concerns raised by citizens and stakeholders over the need to make the register available electronically, in addition to the physical display previously conducted at registration areas across the country.
“Accordingly, and in furtherance of its commitment to transparency, accessibility and public confidence in the electoral process, the Commission has decided to make available on its online platform https://display.inecnigeria.org the same Preliminary Register of Voters earlier displayed at the Registration Areas,” the statement said.
The commission explained that the online publication would complement the physical display and enable more Nigerians to examine the register without necessarily visiting designated registration centres.
“This additional measure complements the physical display already undertaken and is intended to facilitate wider public access to the register,” INEC added.
The development comes amid growing public interest in the credibility of the voters’ register ahead of the 2027 elections, with stakeholders emphasising the importance of identifying inaccuracies and ensuring that eligible voters are properly captured.
INEC said it was continuing to process claims and objections submitted during the display exercise in accordance with the Electoral Act 2026.
The commission explained that the exercise would precede the certification and publication of the final register of voters, scheduled for 15 December 2026.
The claims and objections process provides an opportunity for eligible voters and other stakeholders to raise concerns about omissions, incorrect information and potentially ineligible entries before the register is finalised.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting the electoral process in accordance with the law and maintaining public confidence in its preparations for the elections.
“The Commission appreciates the continued interest and constructive engagement of Nigerians and stakeholders and reiterates its commitment to transparency, accountability and the faithful implementation of the Electoral Act, 2026 in delivering credible elections,” the statement added.
The planned online publication is expected to provide an additional avenue for public scrutiny of the register before its final certification.
