FG Prefers a Low-Key Independence Day Celebration to ‘Realities on the Ground’

The 63rd anniversary of Nigeria’s independence would be a low-key occasion, with no international leaders invited, according to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

On Monday, Akume informed reporters in Abuja that President Bola Tinubu has approved a low-key celebration in light of the current economic realities. The anniversary’s theme is “Nigeria @ 63, Renewed Hope for Unity and Prosperity.”

“There have been no invitations from world leaders.” Because of the reality on the ground, this celebration is low-key, as I have stated. We haven’t invited any foreign leaders. We would gather international leaders to celebrate with us when the time came. But for the time being, none,” Akume replied.

The SGF assured that the administration, which took office in May, was still in its early stages and that Nigerians will soon see policy implementation and project execution.

Despite political instability and coups in various parts of the West African subregion, Nigerians, he claims, have fully accepted democracy as the ideal form of governance.

Akume reminded citizens that the government was aware of the economic hardships Nigerians were facing since the elimination of the fuel subsidy, citing the impact of the global economic slump.

He went on to say that the government was working to give required palliatives and was collaborating with labour to address areas of concern for all Nigerian workers and Nigerians in general.
