EDITORIAL: Like “Mama Taraba like Binani.”

The All-Progressive Congress candidate Aishatu Binani’s recent declaration that her candidature has met the aspirations of Adamawa residents demonstrates how far she is removed from reality and from the plight of the people she seeks to govern.

With misery defining the lives of ordinary Nigerians, one wonders what Binani will do differently than Fintiri. Because of growing existential problems, it appears that everyone wears Binani’s despair like a badge, and the Adamawa APC candidate’s self-praise is a stark caricature of fictitious governance.

The recently concluded presidential election in Adamawa was supposed to demonstrate the APC’s popularity in the state. Binani, on the other hand, lost her polling units, ward, and local government to the PDP, which was an error on the part of the APC.

I recall the excitement that greeted the late “Mama Taraba” and Paul Tallen’s candidature in Taraba and Plateau, where the two politically exposed women shook Messrs. Darius and Lalong’s seats but were eventually subdued. The same scenario is playing out in Adamawa once more.

As much as we understand the power of Binani’s stomach infrastructure, which has already cast a spell on a sizable number of voters, we believe the quality leadership provided by Umaru Fintiri will be visible after the meal is eaten, as shared by the APC candidate, but we are still perplexed as to how Binani intends to steal the victory.

As the viral video demonstrates, the race for governor of Adamawa extends beyond Adamawa Central. Rather, it includes the three senatorial districts and culminates in a winner.

Binani will have to pass through the eyes of a needle to defeat Umaru Fintiri; if she asks Paul Tallen, she will definitely tell Binani about her impending defeat.

The botched APC primary that made Binani the party’s candidate until now is rife with controversy, and it will be difficult for the candidate to believe that the general election will be similar to her party primary and that the highest bidder will win, or that she will pull a surprise as the Obedient Movement did in the previous presidential election.

We have yet to see the APC candidate in Adamawa’s manifesto. Fast forward to the viral video, in which she boasts about winning by any means necessary.

Was she boosting of winning because INEC gave her the printing job for the 2023 general election, or because the party’s state working committee of the party she has kept in obscurity until now?

If she says she doesn’t need her party’s SWC, what about a heavyweight like Umaru Jibrilla Bindow, who has thousands of followers in Adamawa state?

As in Taraba and the Plateau, history is about to repeat itself. As governor, Fintiri is believed to have tried at all levels of government; however, the issue of stomach infrastructure should be addressed seriously in his second term.

The headwind Binani is facing and the lack of support for the APC in Adamawa as well as the lack of support from her party members, demonstrate how hollow Binani’s rhapsody about her imagined victory is.
