Peter Obi named NDC presidential candidate for Nigeria’s 2027 election

Peter Obi has been unveiled as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, setting up a three-way contest with President Bola Tinubu and former vice-president Atiku Abubakar.

The former Anambra state governor emerged as the party’s flag bearer at a special convention held in Abuja on Saturday. Shortly after accepting the nomination, Obi announced former Kano state governor and ex-defence minister Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.

Obi’s nomination comes days after Atiku secured the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), another opposition platform seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.

The ADC said Atiku defeated his closest challenger, former Rivers state governor Rotimi Amaechi, in the party’s presidential primary held on Wednesday.

Both Atiku and Obi had joined the ADC in July 2025 as part of a broader opposition realignment aimed at unseating Tinubu in the 2027 election. However, Obi later defected to the NDC alongside Kwankwaso, reshaping the opposition landscape and raising fresh questions about efforts to build a united front against the APC.

Obi’s candidacy is expected to strengthen the NDC’s position as a major opposition force. The party has gained momentum in recent weeks following the arrival of Obi and Kwankwaso and their respective support bases, the Obidient Movement and the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

The development sets the stage for a potentially fiercely contested presidential race on 16 January 2027, with Tinubu expected to seek re-election, Atiku carrying the ADC banner and Obi leading the NDC ticket.

Political observers say the emergence of multiple opposition candidates could energise the campaign season while also risking a split in anti-incumbent votes, a factor that may prove decisive in determining the outcome of the election.
