Tinubu hails navy’s anti-piracy success as fleet review marks 70 years of service

President Bola Tinubu has commended the Nigerian Navy for its role in securing Nigeria’s territorial waters, declaring that the maritime force has eradicated piracy and significantly reduced crude oil theft and other maritime crimes.

The president made the remarks on Monday during the Nigerian Navy International Fleet Review (IFR) at the Eko Atlantic Waterfront in Victoria Island, Lagos, the flagship event marking the navy’s 70th anniversary celebrations.

Addressing naval personnel, foreign dignitaries and senior military officials, Tinubu praised the service’s operational capabilities, saying its efforts had strengthened security in coastal communities and contributed to national economic growth.

“Through effective integration of surveillance, rapid response mechanisms and operations, you have successfully eradicated piracy in our waters and significantly curtailed crude oil theft and associated maritime crime,” the president said.

“These achievements have enhanced the security of communities and contributed to increasing economic activities, thereby supporting national economic growth. I am confident that the Nigerian Navy will continue to secure the maritime environment as a thriving engine of our blue economy.”

The fleet review featured the commissioning of three naval vessels – NNS Mambila, NNS Gurara and NNS Oloibiri – alongside a presidential trooping and the presentation of new colours.

Beyond maritime security, Tinubu also acknowledged the navy’s growing role in internal security operations, particularly in the fight against terrorism and insurgency.

“Beyond the maritime domain, I also commend the Nigerian Navy for its contribution to counter-terrorism and insurgency,” he said.

“The courage and professionalism demonstrated by the Special Boat Services in executing complex missions are truly commendable.”

The president urged the leadership of the service to sustain its operational momentum and continue strengthening its capabilities to address evolving security challenges.

“I charge the officers of the Nigerian Navy to sustain this high standard of professionalism and continually deepen your operational capability and effectiveness to safeguard our waters,” he said.

Reflecting on the navy’s seven-decade history, Tinubu said the service had evolved alongside Nigeria’s development, growing from a modest institution into one of the continent’s leading maritime forces.

“The Nigerian Navy has evolved in tandem with our nation’s sovereignty, growing from a fledgling service into a modern, sophisticated naval power and an anchor of stability for Nigeria’s economic prosperity,” he said.

The president added that the navy had attained a position of continental leadership through sustained investment, professionalism and operational success.

“The Nigerian Navy has reached a pinnacle of continental leadership. Congratulations to the Nigerian Navy for emerging as the most formidable naval force in Africa,” he said.

Established on 1 June 1956, the Nigerian Navy is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a series of events highlighting its history, operational achievements and contribution to national security.
