MAU admits 8,591 students for 2025/2026 session as VC touts new faculties, hostels, 24-hour solar power

Modibbo Adama University has admitted 8,591 undergraduate and postgraduate students for the 2025/2026 academic session.

The vice-chancellor, Ibrahim Umar, disclosed this on Thursday during the institution’s matriculation ceremony at its convocation ground in Yola, Yola.

Umar said the figure reflects the university’s growing capacity and rising public confidence in its programmes.

He highlighted key milestones recorded under his administration, including improved staff welfare and the expansion of academic offerings with the establishment of three new faculties: Communication and Media Studies, Computing, and Arts.

The vice-chancellor also cited infrastructure improvements, notably the provision of a steady power supply across the campus through a 24-hour solar-powered system to support learning and research.

He said the university had constructed two new hostels — one each for male and female students — and revealed plans for additional accommodation through interventions by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund and public-private partnerships. Further construction and renovation of hostels and lecture theatres are planned for the next academic session, he added.

Addressing the new students, Umar said their admission was both an achievement and a responsibility.

“Your presence here is a testament to your hard work, determination and resilience. You are not only gaining admission but embracing a responsibility — a commitment to academic excellence, discipline, integrity and the pursuit of knowledge,” he said.

He warned that the university maintains zero tolerance for examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse and other social vices, stressing that offenders would face strict disciplinary action.

Umar also acknowledged initial accommodation challenges faced by some students, assuring them that measures had been put in place to address the situation.

Highlights of the ceremony included the administration of the oath of allegiance by the registrar, goodwill messages from sister institutions, and a ceremonial parade.
