June 12: Fintiri hails democracy heroes, calls for stronger institutions
Adamawa state governor, Rt Hon Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has called on Nigerians to remain united and committed to democratic ideals as the country marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
In a statement by his spokesman, Humwashi Wonosikou, commemorating June 12, Fintiri described the day as a symbol of the resilience, sacrifices and triumph of the Nigerian people in their collective journey towards nationhood.
The governor paid tribute to the heroes of democracy, both living and dead, whose efforts helped secure and sustain democratic governance in the country. He said June 12 remains a defining moment in Nigeria’s political history and a reminder that sovereignty ultimately resides with the people.
Fintiri said his administration had, over the past seven years, recorded significant achievements in infrastructure development, with projects designed to improve economic activities and the wellbeing of residents across Adamawa state.
According to him, the progress made by his government demonstrates that democracy can work effectively when leadership is focused on the needs of the people.
“As we mark this year’s Democracy Day, I call for the continued support, patience and cooperation of all citizens of Adamawa state and Nigeria at large. With your support, we can consolidate on our gains and provide even more dividends of democracy that will uplift our communities, strengthen our economy and secure a better future for our children,” he said.
The governor also urged Nigerians to work together to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure a successful democratic transition in the years ahead.
He expressed confidence that the country would overcome its current challenges through unity, resilience and collective determination.
“The challenges of today cannot and will not overwhelm our great country. We are a people defined by resilience, courage and hope. If we stand united, Nigeria will emerge stronger,” he said.
Fintiri stressed that nation-building requires tolerance, patriotism and collective effort, urging citizens to remain peaceful and actively support democratic processes.
“Democracy is not an event but a process. Let us all play our part to deepen it, protect it and ensure that it delivers prosperity, justice and dignity for every Nigerian,” he added.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency, inclusive governance and people-centred development, pledging to continue implementing policies and programmes aimed at improving the lives of the people of Adamawa state.
