At the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, President Bola Tinubu’s bloated delegation of 1,411 people has been questioned by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He allegedly has his political henchmen and mistresses crammed within the delegation, which the PDP claims is costing the country a pretty penny. This was said in a statement made by the party’s national publicity secretary in Abuja on Sunday.   “The PDP believes that this incident proves once again that the Tinubu-led APC administration is careless, foolish, and wasteful with the country’s limited resources. This comes at a time when Nigerians are hoping for responsible spending to restore infrastructure, create jobs, and revive the economy.    “The PDP rejects the weak effort by the Presidency to justify the excessive delegation by claiming that legitimate sub-national officials, businesses, journalists, and civil societies are covering the costs of the cronies, mistresses, and other associates of the Presidency who are supposedly attending the conference on the government’s dime,” the PDP stated. All decent Nigerians, including our party, are horrified by the APC government’s wasteful spending and policies that have encouraged and institutionalised corruption thus far. “It is truly disheartening to see the APC administration’s attempt to mislead Nigerians, especially considering that the delegation list is already in the public domain.” To elaborate, Ologunagba asked, “Why would a country whose citizens are dying daily from inability to purchase necessities be willing to fritter its resources and scarce foreign exchange in such a manner?” What this administration cares about is enriching a small group of people at the expense of the majority of Americans; it doesn’t care about the welfare of the country as a whole. “Our Party is calling on the President to reveal the names of the federally sponsored delegation to the conference, their significance to the conference, and the total cost to the nation of this sponsorship,” the party said in a statement.   The Nigerian people are well-informed about the Conference and are aware of which officials represent subnational governments and other groups that have financially supported themselves.   “The PDP demands that the National Assembly promptly launch an investigation into this shameful revelation and hold accountable any individual or institution found responsible, in accordance with its constitutional duty under Section 88 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), which grants it the authority to probe and expose corruption by any government agency.

There have been calls for Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, to reject what is supposedly an initiative by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, to construct a “befitting residence” for Senator Kashim Shettima, the Vice President. Social and Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) urged Akpabio in a letter dated December 2 to “immediately reject the plan by the Minister of the FCT, Nysom Wike to spend N15 billion for the construction of ‘a befitting residence’ for the Vice President, Mr. Kashim Shettima.”   “Demand the Senate’s authority and constitutional oversight roles to reject the N2.8 billion on publicity for the FCTA and other proposed wasteful and unnecessary spending that may be contained in the 2023 supplementary budget and the 2024 budget proposed by President Bola Tinubu,” the statement read.   This was revealed in a statement made public on Sunday by Kolawole Oluwadari, the deputy director of SERAP. In accordance with his oath of office and other constitutional obligations, the Senate must verify that Governor Wike’s proposed budget is fully comply with all sections of the constitution.   The statement emphasised that all public authorities are still bound by the rule of law. Rejecting wasteful and needless expenditure to satisfy the personal comfort and lifestyles of public officials is one way the National Assembly, including the Senate, can handle the country’s debt situation, which is a constitutional obligation.   “The National Assembly must resume its oversight duties immediately. The Senate needs to show its independence by refusing to approve any spending that is superfluous or wasteful.   Considering that the federal government is projected to allocate 30%, or N8.25 trillion, of the country’s 2024 budget of N27.5 trillion for debt service costs, the group asserts that the Senate’s approval of the plan to spend N15 billion on a “befitting residence” for the vice president would constitute a serious breach of the public trust and constitutional oath of office.

Peter Afunanya, the DSS’s director of public relations and strategic communications, has denied that Yusuf Bichi, the agency’s director general, stole a subsidised grant from the agency’s staff. While Mr. Bichi is up to no good, the writer persists in painting him in a negative light and portraying him as corrupt, despite the fact that the DSS evidence proves otherwise. Appointed DGSS after being called from retirement in 2018, Bichi is portrayed as austere, responsible, open, and uncorruptible. According to the report, he has consistently demonstrated unwavering dedication to leading the Service and has handled its business with exceptional rigour. He warned the public not to believe the claims and that the DG would seek legal action.

 According to the Ondo State Commissioner for Information, Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, President Bola Tinubu, in his involvement in the state’s political turmoil, requested a signed resignation letter from the state’s Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa. After a months-long political deadlock with the governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, Aiyedatiwa presided over the state’s executive council meeting on Thursday.   Tinubu convened the executive council meeting after summoning warring factions loyal to Akeredolu and Aiyedatiwa to resolve the state’s political issue. Tinubu’s involvement meant that Akeredolu stayed governor and Aiyedatiwa remained deputy governor, according to the Presidency.   However, Ademola-Olateju, stated that the President later requested a signed undated resignation from the deputy governor in case anything untoward occurred. “First and foremost, before I even speak about the Abuja meeting, I want to thank the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for being a very good leader in the midst of the Ondo State crisis.”   “We thank him for intervening to cool the temperature that was just going haywire in Ondo State.”Mr President, the leader of our party, the All Progressives Congress, made crucial choices at the Abuja meeting.   The important decisions were to retain the state’s status quo.
